Someone who takes a full palette of colors, dips their brush into some of them, and tries to fill in their outline drawing in 1 layer. And in doing this they try to get everything right at once - color, shape, tone, etc.

You cover the canvas and your done, right?

Well, sure - if you want to make amateurish paintings.

I know that can sound harsh and arrogant, but go to any art museum in a larger city and look at the paintings there.

Don't try to do it all at once. Especially when you are learning.

Separate the painting process into stages. Give your full attention to the stage you are working on.

So, you use an underpainting because it makes traditional oil painting easier...period!

The old masters used an underpainting to separate the problems of drawing, tone values, and color. You know, all those confusing problems that must be dealt with to make a good oil painting.

Paintings made using this layering process have a different quality than paintings done in 1 "Colored in" layer. They are substantial and have that "old master quality"

If you want a "colored in" look, stock with paint by numbers.
